Is there a Welsh version of the christian name Sophie , sofi Sophi?

I doubt that there is a "true" Welsh version of Sophie as it is a Greek name and Welsh is a Germannic language. There is probably a similar Welsh name but you'll have to some looking - check out Breton as well as Irish names too as there linguistic origins are similar to Welsh.

There aren't any common Welsh names that are used as a translation of Sophie, at least that I know of, because Sophie is actually a common girl's name in Britain. The meaning of Sophie is 'wisdom,' and some Welsh families name their children Dara which means 'wisdom' in Hebrew, but I like Sophie much more than Dara! If you're going for similar sounds, you could use Sioned or Sian (Welsh) or Siobhan (Shauvon/Irish), which are unique and historical.
Reply:Well in welsh the ph (f) sound is a double f (ff) one f by itself is a 'v' sound, so phonetically Sophie would be Soffi.

Reply:Sophia is a Greek name, it means wisdom, that's what I am calling my baby who is due in about 3 weeks!!! The British version is Sophie, but I don't think there is a Welsh version as such.

Although if you wanted to spell Sophie the Welsh Language way it could not be "Sofi" as a single "f" in Welsh makes a "v" sound.





Sophi could probably be used as the dipthong "ph" is used in Welsh to make a "f" sound.
