Are the name particles "ap" and "verch" signs of the old Welsh upper class?

Or did all of the Welsh citizens of the 1300's, 1200's, etc, use these particles in their names?

Are the name particles "ap" and "verch" signs of the old Welsh upper class?
If you meen on your last name, I know ap is. Ap means son of, Ap Richard=Pritchard, Ap Reece= Preece.
