Welsh names for a beautiful baby girl?

i became a grandmother today for the first time can anyone suggest any welsh names for a beautiful baby girl

Welsh names for a beautiful baby girl?
Congrats!

I'm due 8 December.

I'm Welsh and we toyed with some Welsh names for our little one (we're having a boy so the girl's name have had to go out of the window)

But the two I really liked were Catrin and Angharad (as they are not as popular as some of the others so a bit more unique).

We were going to call our baby Rose Catrin Angharad if it was a girl.

Bronwen is nice too.

I prefer the more unusual Welsh names that aren't used so much, as you get real "gluts" of certain names down here that just about EVERYONE uses - Ffion, Rhian, Seren and Carys are very popular right now, just about every other baby girl born around here is given one of those names!

As it is, we're going to call our little boy Arthur David William (couldn't decide on a Welsh boys' name but Arthur is Celtic I s'pose. . . Baby's half English (my BF) anyway!)
Reply:Cerridwen? Rhiannon? I'm not too familiar with Welsh names, but these are lovely ones. Hope that helps.
Reply:Rhiannon
Reply:I always liked Cerys

Why are all Welsh names French?

Roberts, Williams, Davies, Jones... they're all French

Why are all Welsh names French?
They are not French, but there is a hint of truth in what you say, as surnames were imposed on the Welsh by the Norman conquerers. Previously they would simply have their first name and be known as "ap" or "son of" their father. Rhys ap Iorwerth, for example. The Normans would not be able to get their tongue round a name such as Iorwerth, so would have bestowed the name "Edwards" on such a man. Similarly Huw ap Ioan would have ended up as Huw Jones, and so on. Clearly the names the Normans favoured were good Norman French type names.

Reply:Well, you aren't even close to spelling the Welch names properly, so making a connection with French is difficult. Why cant English people pronounce Welsh names/place names properly?

Pure ignorance!

Fe godwn ni eto Lloegr!Dydy ni ddim yn eich cadwynau ddim rhagor,fe godwn ni eto!

Cymru am byth!

Why cant English people pronounce Welsh names/place names properly?
It is hard for anyone from another country to pronounce another countries words...not just English and the Welsh...each has their own sounds that they are not use to using in every day language and the accents put on words may be very different. I am from the Southern USA and I go to Greece every year to visit. Over there it is very difficult for me to say the words with a "R" in them for we in the south are not use to rolling our "Rs" like they do.

But you know what? They are just happy that I try to learn their language...maybe you should learn something from them?
Reply:Because Welsh is impossible to pronounce. It makes Kikuyu seem like baby talk.
Reply:Hon, once I master at least two languages spoken by significant numbers of people, and get through the other items on my "to do" list, I'll work on it.
Reply:I know Wales is totally boring but please stop asking the same question try very hard to get your two Welsh brain cells to connect and think of another more interesting one, or just shut up. Capice???
Reply:because we do not speak the language or see the need to learn. it is not spoken by enough people to make it necessary to learn it.

too many other issues and priorities in the world to think about that.
Reply:didn't know wales had parrots or did you just forget you asked this like 20 times?

whats the matter? are you bored? is your girlfriend away been sheared?
Reply:Ok
Reply:Yey 2 points

Thanks for wasing our time :) You obviously are bored. Mind translating that crap into English?

If you want Irish names and their meaning, the last place you should look is babynames.com.

At least half of the meanings given above are totally ludicrous and have no connection with the real meanings, e.g. "Brennan" does not mean Prince - especially when there were no equivalents of a "prince" in Irish aristocracy (the heditary system under Brehon Law was completely different from the feudal system).

Conner = "Wolf lover"???

Cormac = "Destroying son"????

Other names listed were never used in Ireland until invented by "Irish" americans.

Devin = "Descendant of the dark-haired One"???? ROFLOL

Lastly, "Shannon" is the name of a river. It doesn't mean "Old" and the person who invented this meaning probably guessed it from another word "sean" which means old but has nothing to do with the river Shannon.

My son's name is EUAN can anyone tell me whether it is scottish or Welsh???

the name is scottish with an anglicized spelling it is a variant of eoghan which is both irish and scottish celtic it is sometimes used as the gaelic form of eugene.

hope that helps............euan is a scottish name tho and has been used for many many years even with that spelling

My son's name is EUAN can anyone tell me whether it is scottish or Welsh???
Scottish. That's my Scottish Grandpa's name.
Reply:scottish
Reply:The spelling EUAN is EXCLUSIVE, however EWAN is GAELIC..
Reply:I live in Scotland and work in a Primary school - it's a very popular name up here but more commonly spellt Ewan, only a few spellt Euan.
Reply:According to one website: thinkbabynames.com, it's Irish, but others say it's Scottish Gaelic, possibly meaning Born of the Yew tree, a variant of Ewan.

The Welsh equivalent is Iwan.
Reply:Hi, It's Scottish, it can be spelt three ways:

Ewan, Ewen, Euan.

It's from the Anglicizations of Eoghan,
Reply:This may be a Scottish name - but this particular spelling seems to be Irish.
Reply:Scottish
Reply:I found this on BABY NAMES WORLD....hope it of some help

Gender: Boy

Meaning: Born from the yew tree; youth

Origin: Gaelic

Categories: Irish

Pronunciation: (YOO un)

Form of: Eoghan

Variants: N/A
Reply:A good old-fashioned Scottish name.

Although the spekking is usually Ewan or Ewen.
Reply:I think it's gay.
Reply:Sounds, - and LOOKS, - like it is of SCOTTISH origin! It's all to do, with PRONUNCIATION! Tony Blair's eldest SON, is called "EUAN", - and, remember, Tony Blair was BORN in SCOTLAND!
Reply:I rather think it is Welsh, but I am not sure.
Reply:It isn't Scottish. I know because I am Scottish, come from an entirerly Scottish family, and have some extensive knowledge on Scottish history. Perhaps you should do a name search on any one of the numerous name sites on the web.
Reply:"Euan" sounds as if it is Welsh. "Ian" could be Scots, though I don't know if both words mean the same thing.
Reply:I think it may be Welsh. Think the Scottish spelling is 'Ewan'.
Reply:i thought it was irish! but il say scottish
Reply:Scottish. I think the Welsh way is spelled Ewan.
Reply:Depends, where did you find him?
Reply:Not sure but we have lots of them in Wales.
Reply:I dunno. Where are you from?
Reply:The boy's name Euan is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is "little swift one."
Reply:I think it depends on the spelling. Euan is welsh and Ewan is Scottish (i think!) I have the same thing with my sons name Finn one way is Scottish and another is Irish and there are Finns in both Irish and Scottish folklore.

According to the IMDB message board it's called "From here you can almost see the sea".
Reply:The movie is available on DVD, but no soundtrack was released.

On the David Gray website it references that some of compositions from the movie were refined into what would be the album "Life In Slow Motion". This includes the song "From Here You Can Almost See the Sea" (which is beautiful) and might be the one you are looking for.

* Gwendolyn - the literal root here would be the gwen + dolen, not LYN, elements LOL

* Bronwyn - ditto the above. This one strikes me as particularly ignorant, since the substituted -wyn ending seems an attempt to indicate a masculine form (meaning those using it obviously aren't familiar with the name or its roots)

* Charis/Caris - Greek names, not related to Welsh Carys

* Teagan and Morrigan - both separate Irish names, not the same as Welsh Tegan and Morgan

There are plenty of wonderful Welsh options out there! ;) You might find quite a few more that would appeal here (very accurate site, by the way!): http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/wel_f.p... Hope these help!

WhaI want to change my name back to the original Welsh. Problem it's illegal in UK will it effect it in the US?

Both of my grandfathers were from the same tribe in Northern Wales. They were both put on ships in the middle of the night and sent away. They found their way to the US and both married native americans.

Immigration gave them names that were english.

The problem I am worried about is that under the U.K. rabble rouser laws the family name is not legal on government documents in the U.K., will that effect my abillity to change it back in the U.S.?

WhaI want to change my name back to the original Welsh. Problem it's illegal in UK will it effect it in the US?
There have been no Welsh tribes for centuries.

Transportation ended before your grandfathers were born.

No name is illegal in the UK as long as it is not offensive.

You are an American and subject to the laws of the United States.
Reply:Sounds a bit like an outdated law. I'm sure the US wouldn't have a problem with you changing your name : )

Probably a reduced form of English Cockerham, or an altered spelling of Scottish Cochran.

The same name can come from more than one nationality. Also you don't know how many people were in colonial America with those names that aren't on the immigration list Ancestry.Com has. Those are very small samples.

My name's Lewis and it used to be quite uncommon but now it's everywhere. A trip to deedpoll is in order I think lol
Reply:Hi, Gareth is mainly Welsh, but people use the name cos they like it, the meaning of Gareth is : Malory's remodelling of " Gahariet", my son is called Gareth after Gareth Edwards the Welsh rugby player, also my husband is Welsh so we wanted welsh names for our children
Reply:I know quite a few non Welsh Gareths-all aged between 25 and 30 so I guess it was popular about 30 years ago for some reason
Reply:It's not that unusual in Ireland either. I know two Gareths. The Irish version of it is Garrett. or Gearoid.

I like it. It's hunky and masculine

Is anyone from Wales? I'm looking for information regarding typically Welsh names?
As a southern cal boy, I had never known how Welsh "Jones" was until I played Detective Jones in Agatha Chritie's Spider Web. I also enjoyed the challenge of working on the lyric Welsh accent.

"Jones is a common family name that comes from the term 'Son of John' or 'Son of Joan' but can also be attributed to the name 'Jonah' 鈥?a name of Icelandic origins suggesting a Viking connection. It has further been suggested it derives from Germanic settlers in the United Kingdom with the name Johannes. I don't know if I've mentioned this to you before, but I spent some time working as a chef in Wales, it's a beautiful place with very friendly people. Some typical names I encountered whilst working there were Evans, Bevan, Biven, Griffiths, Hughes, Jenkins, Jones, Morgan and Rees.

I checked a couple of research sites for you and found details about these and other Welsh names which you can find here...

What was the name of the little welsh girl who saved for 6 years to buy a bible then walked 25 miles to get 1

Mary Jones

The Legend

Many years ago, a young girl lived with her parents in a small cottage in the Welsh countryside. On Sunday mornings Mary and her parents walked to the little chapel in the village two miles away, and one particular Sunday caused Mary a great deal of excitement. The minister announced that a school was to open in the village, and Mary thought to herself, "Now I can learn to read, and one day read the Bible."

Mary saved all she could, until she had enough money to buy a Bible. It took about 8 years. She was told that a man in a town called Bala had a number of Bibles so Mary decided she would walk there, which was about 20 miles. The journey seemed endless. Mary followed many paths, crossed valleys and streams, and found her way around hills until eventually she arrived. She then set out to find a gentleman called Mr Charles and, after knocking on several doors asking for directions, she found his house.

As his door opened, Mary made her request for a Bible. "You are fortunate," Mr Charles informed her, "this is the very last one." He held out a brand new Bible and Mary stared at it for a long moment before taking it with both hands. Then she expressed her heartfelt thanks. Soon after Mary's visit Thomas Charles went to London, and he shared the story of Mary Jones with some important men. They were as moved as he was.

In 1804 the British and Foreign Bible Society was formed by some of these people in response to the need for Bibles, which stories like that of Mary Jones brought to light. Over many years this story has been recounted with some variations, because Mary herself never wrote down her own account of it. Many of the facts are uncertain and, sadly, cannot be verified so we must therefore call it a legend.

If ever you visit the head office of the British and Foreign Bible Society you can see the actual Bible which Mary Jones treasured all her life.

Don't know, but man, is that dedication. How many of us would scrimp and save for something like that. That bible meant more to her then material possessions means to most of us. Bless her.

Just curious how Welsh would pronounce Roald Dahl and Irish family name Ahern.?

Ro-ald da-hl with stresses on both vowels in general

and Ahern um i would pronounce it Ah -herrn. with a rolling R and a stresses on the vowels.

Just curious how Welsh would pronounce Roald Dahl and Irish family name Ahern.?
The Welsh would pronounce it in the same way as the English would as they are names. There would probably be an accent but pronounciation would be the same.

Reply:think about his name or nickname, and then use that and your imagination to make a fancy name no one will forget. also think about what division he will be specializing in. a speedy name wouldn't do for a dressage horse, right?

a direct explanation of the name.

"wales " originates from the word "wallas", which meant foreigner. This is where the 'wall' in Cornwall comes from
Reply:Wales" and "Welsh" is indeed derived from the old Anglo-Saxon word "waleas" meaning "foreigners
Reply:The English name for Wales originates from the Germanic word Walha, meaning "stranger" or "foreigner", probably derived from the term Volcae.
