What is the literal translation of Anglesey's Welsh name - Ynys Mon?

Ynys Mon come from the Princes Monna who was an irish princess who married a welsh prince (Welsh mythology - Tywysoges Mona) Therefore it was called after her as Ynys Mona but as times go on and names change and develop it became Ynys M么n.

Mon mam Cymru is used as a tourist slogan to publicize Anglesey and means Mon the mother of Wales. This is similar to the so called Italian boot, and names like that.

What is the literal translation of Anglesey's Welsh name - Ynys Mon?
Ynys M么n is Welsh for the "island of M么n" (named after princess Mona). It is reckoned that Anglesey is the mother of Wales...hence the description, "M么n, Mam Cymru."

What should I name my new welsh corgi puppy?

I have 3 names that I want to pick from but I can't decide. What do you think she looks like? (Ultimately I will decide of course but I just want some other's opinions too.) Here is her picture: http://i33.tinypic.com/29ol3so.jpg

2. Gidget

3. Triscuit (Triss for short)

Or any other cute name you might think of!

What should I name my new welsh corgi puppy?
I like Gidget. What an adorable puppy!
Reply:Choosing a breed? No problem. Deciding whether to get a puppy or adult dog? Piece of cake. So now comes the hard part: coming up with a name.

Serious or silly, evocative or ironic--whatever you decide to christen your dog, it better be something you're comfortable both printing on veterinary forms as well as yelling at the top of your lungs from the other side of the park.

Here are some lists of cute dog names http://tinyurl.com/67thsr

I need a welsh or celtic girls name and a possible good matching middle name?

I am currently pregnant with my 3rd child and have picked out the name Cai if its a boy, but i dont have a clue for a girls name. I have 2 boys already and the only girls name that i really liked was Nerice, but i ended up calling my second son Rhyce Bastian, because i wasnt sure i wanted another child. I need a middle name that works with Cai for a boy, and i need a welsh girls name, and i like Cai for a boy but am not keen on it for a girl. Help!

I need a welsh or celtic girls name and a possible good matching middle name?
Gosh, I am not too sure what to tell you other than I'm struggling with names too. I found a fun website, that is pretty extensive. It has a great listing of various names for different heritages:

www.babynameaddicts.com

I did a quick search on girls names (starting with "c"), in the Welsh category and came up with Catrin.

Check out the site and best wishes!
Reply:Bronwyn seems popular for a girl. Madoc for boys middle name.
Reply:Ciara for a girl is Irish/Celtic. Maeve, Aishling, Inagh, and Gwendolynne are good girls names too. Usually a more traditional name is used for a middle name, like from a family member.
Reply:welsh names have really complicated spellings because in the welsh language, the pronunciations of many sounds require numerous letters. take the welsh name Gwenwhyfar.....the common version you see of this name is Guinevere, the French version. see what i mean? but now that i've bored you with linguistics, names that have Gwen in them are commonly welsh. like Gwennyth, Gwendolyn, etc.. i personally like Gwennyth and Gwenaeryn.....but there are tons of celtic names that have nothing to do with gwen... try babynamesofireland.com they're a very helpful site!

this site has welsh names http://www.babynames.org.uk/welsh-baby-n...

Welsh people, do you hate it when English people correct your pronunciation of a Welsh name or place? ?

My address ( which I am obviously not gonna say) is Welsh, but English people pronounce it a different way, as in how is sounds. my parents are Irish, and they pronounce it the correct way. But when I tell my address to people they say it back in a different way! it just annoys me.

Welsh people, do you hate it when English people correct your pronunciation of a Welsh name or place? ?
Ignorant English for You My Old Dad had the same problem

Langolon Used to really get up his nose It was times like this I got to learn the naughty bits !!
Reply:Yes. I remember how I had to deal with a Jamaican called "Llewellyn" and he objected to having his name pronounced correctly. I told him that I couldn't bring myself to mispronounce it and that I would have to go on saying it as I had been brought up to do. He was very resentful at this, but I still feel that if you are going to go around with a Welsh name you should be prepared to have people pronounce it properly.

I knew a Cockney barrister who had to go to Llanelli on a case and he couldn't understand why he met with so much hostility from locals. It turned out that he was pronouncing the name "Lanuhli", with the stress on the first syllable (rather like "Flannery"). I think he lost.
Reply:Cytunaf Sindy, I agree Sindy

But i think your question is phrased wrong.

We don't get coreccted rather people who are ignorant obnoxiouse (Namely English people in General who tend to think they're always wright)

I had an arguement with someone once who said

Rydw i Cymraeg , and i Said that's not coreect its

Rydw i'n Gymraeg, And because she was a female i told her that she would be best saying

Rydw i'n Gymraes. but she would not be corrected and it was so irritating because I am more proficient in Welsh than what i am in English for heavens sake Welsh is my first language. And when you have arrogant people pronouncing it their way, What annoyes me is , Abersock o'r Clanechli. (Abersoch - Llanelli)

I told them it's not the mouth of the Sock it's the mouth of the Soch, Abersoch and they're response was we're speaking English so we'll pronounce it asif it were English

I replied and said oh ok well I'm going to visit England and go to

Reply:No more annoying than the French calling London Londres or most of us calling Mosva Moscow or Moss Cow in the case of Americans. The French find it hilarious that we say Bew lee for Beaulieu. Different languages require different pronunciation. Chill out, I'm sure there are many things you say your way that infuriate some people.
Reply:I'm a north wallian and i think it's funny when the people on the welsh news pronouce where i live and other places in the north a different way. i dont like the chief police guy of wales because when i went to glan llyn for a welsh course he was there and he had at least 10 pages of about this small of writing (if that makes sense) in complicating welsh that not even 1st languangers understood! o and he told us at the end that even though he was living in wales he wasnt even going to learn how to speak welsh!! wot a pri*k

How do you pronounce the Welsh name "Emrys"?

Y can be pronounced a few different ways in Welsh, the closest match that I have seen is with the y pronounced as a short i sound (as in "did"), so it would be em-ris. The ending "s" invokes a different rule than most other letters.

How do you pronounce the Welsh name "Emrys"?
From what I found I think it's Em-rees

How did Cardiff come to be called Cardiff, seeing as its Welsh name is completely different?

and what does the name Cardiff mean?

How did Cardiff come to be called Cardiff, seeing as its Welsh name is completely different?
Caerdyf, a form which dates to the early 6th century at least, contains two place-name elements. The first is Welsh caer, 'fort, stronghold, enclosure' which is often seen in Welsh place names. This is followed by Taf, a river-name in its genitive form Tyf, mutated to Dyf - 'fort (of the river) Taf'.

The form Cardiff recorded in 1477 represents an anglicised pronunciation of Caerdyf, while Caerdydd demonstrates the interplay between the f and dd consonants in the Welsh language.
Reply:The very first Ford car that was imported into Britain was running through wales many years ago, when it suddenly broke down, there was a nearby garage, and they told the driver what the trouble was and how much, but he was deaf and shouted EH?'? The mechanic screamed in his ear --"ITS THE CAR DIFF" and the area has been called that ever since.
Reply:The welsh pronounciation for Cardiff is Caerdydd. which traslates in English to Day fort or Castle. Historians however believe it should be Caertaft. This would translate to the castle by the taff. The Norman castle in Cardiff is on the banks of the river Taff, so this would be more acceptable as an explanation of The name Cardiff.Any town in Wales that has the word Caer in the name , means there is a Castle there such as , Caerphilly, Caernarfon etc.
Reply:In Welsh the name is Caerdydd. The original meaning is unclear: it's the name of a fort or castle. Cardiff is a spelling of an English attempt to pronounce Caerdydd.
Reply:Cardiff in welsh appears as Caerdydd. It seems that a Roman called Didius, while serving as governor of Britain, had a fort built and it was named after him. Later after the Romans had left the local Britons still called it the fort of Didius, or Caer Didi in their language. Later the name evolved into Caer Dydd.

The fort was built next to the river Taff, and there are some who think the name of the river and the name of the Roman have been confused and ended up being blended together to get the ff ending in english.

It is also possible that the welsh accent made the dd (pronounced like th in the word breathe) of dydd sound more like an f sound.

How do I pronounce the Welsh name Bryn Terfel?

I've been saying "brin ter-ful" but I heard a British announcer call him what sounded like Ter-VEL. Please also tell me the stress pattern: terFEL or TERfel or an even ter-fel.

How do I pronounce the Welsh name Bryn Terfel?
I am a keen opera goer, and have often seen Bryn in the flesh at performances in London. I have always heard the name pronounced "brin ter-fel" with equal stress on both parts of the surname. However the announcer whom you heard may not have been English, and have spoken with a Welsh accent. There is only a slight difference between the pronounciation of v and f depending on who is speaking. To me the pronounciation of some opera singers' names when I listen to Opera from the Met seems odd from this side of the pond.
Reply:It's pronounced Brin tervel. I am a welsh speaker so my English phonetics won't be too good . But F os pronounced as v is in English. U is pronounced as i is in English. Not as oo. W is pronounced as U and Oo are in English
