Welsh people, do you hate it when English people correct your pronunciation of a Welsh name or place? ?

My address ( which I am obviously not gonna say) is Welsh, but English people pronounce it a different way, as in how is sounds. my parents are Irish, and they pronounce it the correct way. But when I tell my address to people they say it back in a different way! it just annoys me.

Welsh people, do you hate it when English people correct your pronunciation of a Welsh name or place? ?
Ignorant English for You My Old Dad had the same problem

Langolon Used to really get up his nose It was times like this I got to learn the naughty bits !!
Reply:Yes. I remember how I had to deal with a Jamaican called "Llewellyn" and he objected to having his name pronounced correctly. I told him that I couldn't bring myself to mispronounce it and that I would have to go on saying it as I had been brought up to do. He was very resentful at this, but I still feel that if you are going to go around with a Welsh name you should be prepared to have people pronounce it properly.

I knew a Cockney barrister who had to go to Llanelli on a case and he couldn't understand why he met with so much hostility from locals. It turned out that he was pronouncing the name "Lanuhli", with the stress on the first syllable (rather like "Flannery"). I think he lost.
Reply:Cytunaf Sindy, I agree Sindy

But i think your question is phrased wrong.

We don't get coreccted rather people who are ignorant obnoxiouse (Namely English people in General who tend to think they're always wright)

I had an arguement with someone once who said

Rydw i Cymraeg , and i Said that's not coreect its

Rydw i'n Gymraeg, And because she was a female i told her that she would be best saying

Rydw i'n Gymraes. but she would not be corrected and it was so irritating because I am more proficient in Welsh than what i am in English for heavens sake Welsh is my first language. And when you have arrogant people pronouncing it their way, What annoyes me is , Abersock o'r Clanechli. (Abersoch - Llanelli)

I told them it's not the mouth of the Sock it's the mouth of the Soch, Abersoch and they're response was we're speaking English so we'll pronounce it asif it were English

I replied and said oh ok well I'm going to visit England and go to

Byrmingham

Niwcasel

Lan car sior

Chester (Pronounced the Welsh way)

and she replied saying don't be so silly, and i said well that's what thousands of you lot do every year, Ever since she makes an Effort, If you hear someone tell you different you correct them

Reply:No more annoying than the French calling London Londres or most of us calling Mosva Moscow or Moss Cow in the case of Americans. The French find it hilarious that we say Bew lee for Beaulieu. Different languages require different pronunciation. Chill out, I'm sure there are many things you say your way that infuriate some people.
Reply:I'm a north wallian and i think it's funny when the people on the welsh news pronouce where i live and other places in the north a different way. Some people can be a bit ignorant though and don't try to pronounce it right. Just ignore them or prononce where they live wrong - that'll teach 'um.
Reply:i have had the same experience as but even more bizarrely, in england. English speakers unable to pronounce the name of my street (which is also in english!). Nowt so queer as folk eh?

I speak welsh and am always having to tell the wife how to pronounce the welsh places we go to. But she has the last laugh.... whenever she sees an ambiwlans she takes the pss. (the old "its just an english word spelt the welsh way")
Reply:i live in north wales in a small town that noone out of wales EVER spells correctly c'mon its spelt the way you say it!!

whats wrong with this world?!

i dont like the chief police guy of wales because when i went to glan llyn for a welsh course he was there and he had at least 10 pages of about this small of writing (if that makes sense) in complicating welsh that not even 1st languangers understood! o and he told us at the end that even though he was living in wales he wasnt even going to learn how to speak welsh!! wot a pri*k

p.s. i got a failing C in my welsh A/S! so annoyed! o well i can resit one of them!

=]

Reply:I'm with Failure by Design we're not doing it to correct you, we're mispronouncing it back to you, but it's the best way we can.
