Why cant English people pronounce Welsh names/place names properly?
It is hard for anyone from another country to pronounce another countries words...not just English and the Welsh...each has their own sounds that they are not use to using in every day language and the accents put on words may be very different. I am from the Southern USA and I go to Greece every year to visit. Over there it is very difficult for me to say the words with a "R" in them for we in the south are not use to rolling our "Rs" like they do.


But you know what? They are just happy that I try to learn their language...maybe you should learn something from them?

They are not French, but there is a hint of truth in what you say, as surnames were imposed on the Welsh by the Norman conquerers. Previously they would simply have their first name and be known as "ap" or "son of" their father. Rhys ap Iorwerth, for example. The Normans would not be able to get their tongue round a name such as Iorwerth, so would have bestowed the name "Edwards" on such a man. Similarly Huw ap Ioan would have ended up as Huw Jones, and so on. Clearly the names the Normans favoured were good Norman French type names.

Reply:Well, you aren't even close to spelling the Welch names properly, so making a connection with French is difficult. Welch is a Celtic language and the Celts were pushed around by the invasion and events around 1066 when French became the language of the court, so making a connection might be a bit difficult.

welsh names have alot of w's, l's and y's all jumbled up to make a word that sounds odd to english speakers.

At least half of the meanings given above are totally ludicrous and have no connection with the real meanings, e.g. "Brennan" does not mean Prince - especially when there were no equivalents of a "prince" in Irish aristocracy (the heditary system under Brehon Law was completely different from the feudal system).
